HM Specialist Inspector - Electrical, Control & Cyber Security

Health & Safety Executive
United Kingdom

A challenging, rewarding and highly varied role inspecting major hazard industrial sites.

At the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) we believe everyone has the right to come home safe and well from their job. Our mission is to prevent work related death, injury and ill health. Inspection helps us check that serious risks are managed sensibly. When things go wrong, investigation helps us get to the truth and learn lessons.

In this vital role, you will help to keep installations such as oil refineries, oil and gas storage, chemicals production and nuclear sites as safe as possible from major accident hazards. Carrying out inspections solo or as part of an expert team, you'll make sure operators are complying fully with the law and managing industrial control system risks suitably. You'll also be responsible for technical assessment of safety cases provided by workplaces. Reports you produce will help sites to address gaps in their mitigation against electrical, control and cyber security risks. In the event of accidents and incidents occurring, you'll carry out investigations, including forensic analysis of elements involving electrical or control systems.

We provide a two-year specialist training programme to equip you with all the legal and technical knowledge you need, while you carry out your duties.

To join us you will need a relevant degree in electrical, electronic or control engineering. An experienced technical manager, you'll bring to the role a proven track record in the selection, design, commissioning, operation and maintenance of process control and safety instrumentation systems in a relevant industry. You'll also need experience of the selection, design, installation, commissioning, inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres. The ability to produce detailed and clear technical reports, and to persuasively present complex technical information to a non-expert audience - potentially as an expert witness - is essential. You must also be able to spend short periods working away from home, including overnight stays.

In addition to the rewarding nature of the role itself, you can look forward to excellent benefits in a working culture that encourages inclusion and diversity. Benefits include a highly competitive Civil Service Pension, flexible and hybrid working options, and learning and development tailored to your role.

Closing date: 9 January 2023.
