Job SummaryContract opportunity for a Telecommunications Field Engineer in Rochester, NY with duration likely around 6 months, potentially longer. Field work will be in upstate New York, central or northern NY area so professional should reside in this area of NY (within a few hours of Rochester, NY). Functions as a Telecommunications Field Engineer, with minimal oversight, works in collaboration with Sr. Network Engineers and Network architect(s). Candidate will integrate and apply moderate to intermediate network concepts and approaches to unique fiber transport network design and engineering problems. On-site surveys will be performed by the individual to gather site specific data. May lead and/or supervise team members/staff on projects of medium to high complexity or serve as an intermediate technical resource providing knowledge and expertise in the field. Key ResponsibilitiesThis Telecommunication Field Engineer will be responsible for: conducting site surveys, configuration, installation, and Integration of telecom related equipment. Provide intermediate technical support, ability to create site survey reports, installation proposals, create and verify bill of materials. Update network design and close out drawings for Black & Veatch's Clients. Participates in project execution and technical delivery. Key duties include: • Candidate must be a self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision • Communicating directly with clients (sometimes non-technical clients) to identify current and future network and telecommunication needs • Collaborate with team of Network Engineers and Network Architects, lead and help to mentor network team members. • Assesses and understand how industry standards for models apply to network design and implementation best practices • May participates as technical lead on major projects and installation rollouts • Responsible for developing and adhering to all Design Engineer quality processes and procedures • Work hand-in-hand with project management on technical issues • May direct production teams and coordinate multiple discipline activities • Supports continuous improvement of project and internal processes • Candidate should be well versed with change management, maintenance window activities and rollback procedures as they relate to installation and migration strategies. • Documentation and processes development • May validate work of lower-level Field Engineers • Capable of optimizing day-to-day operational stability with the continual need to improve the service and deploy new services, processes and technologies • Support efforts related to utility Telecommunication systems • Understands, advocates, and supports Information Technology (IT) and Operation Technology (OT) strategies • Support the pursuit and development of current and new business opportunities • Ability to identify issues and provide feedback for best practices implementationManagement ResponsibilitiesIndividual ContributorPreferred Qualifications• Typically, a minimum of 3+ years network related work experience. Utility experience preferred. • Solid understanding of AC/DC power principles, grounding, and industry cabling/wiring standards • Intermediate experience in performing site surveys and evaluating Telecommunication Networks • Specific product knowledge and hands-on configuration and procurement experience on a variety of Network vendors • Proven experience with installation, commissioning, and integrating Telecom Network devices such as routers, switches, fiber and cable management, and rack power distribution • Hands-on experience with testing and evaluating optical networks using tools such as OTDRs, Light Meters, optical scopes, fiber cleaning kits and other related transport apparatus • Ability to evaluate, refine, and implement network designs • Professional network documentation skills, including, but not limited to the development and updating of network drawings, rack layouts, cut sheets and various technical deliverables • Strong written communication skills especially pertaining to creating reports and installation surveys among other related deliverables • Knowledge of telecommunications technologies, trends and design • Experience with technical proposals • Knowledge of network power systems and requirements • Knowledge or experience with, but not limited to, configuration of Telecommunication equipment and networking test sets are desirable • Translating business requirements to technical network design specifications for implementation • Good understanding and interpretation of telecom principles and technologies • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc....), Visio • Basic knowledge of Telecommunication standards, systems, document control • Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: Proactively seeks and shares knowledge of latest technologies and processes • Attend safety training and abide by Black & Veatch's safety standards • Self-motivated and ability to self-manage • Knowledge of Telecom and Data Network Design and engineering design principles, guidelines and standards nice to have. • Experience configuring optical transport devices nice to have.
