A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SENIOR IT INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER
As our Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer, you have the important job of keeping our IT network running at its full potential. You maintain structures that are important to our network's safety and performance, such as servers, routers, firewalls, and virtual private network protocols. Working closely with users, observatory partners, providers, and vendors, you measure the performance and security of our network. With your analytical mind, you search for ways to improve the systems and implement the upgrades accordingly. You establish and maintain a disaster recovery plan (DRP) so that our observatory can continue to operate even in emergency cases.
You maintain accurate and thorough records regarding security concerns and incidents as well as track overall performance. Using your strong communication skills, you make recommendations to stakeholders concerning network security and potential improvements. You develop clear and concise educational programs and advise people at all levels about security issues, vulnerabilities, and overall best network practices. You take great pride in upholding a high-quality IT infrastructure so our observatory can continue our scientific research!
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SENIOR IT INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER
- 6+ years of experience working in computer science, engineering, or a related technical environment
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field OR an additional 4 years of relevant experience
- Working knowledge of security concepts, protocols, processes, architectures, and tools such as authentication and access control technologies, intrusion detection, network traffic analysis, SIM technology, incident handling, media/malware analysis, etc.
- Working knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and architectures such as OSI-model, TCP/IP, and major application protocols such as DNS/HTTP/SMTP, LAN/WANs, VPNs, routers/routing, addressing, etc.
Experience working with virtualization, cloud-based, or storage area network (SAN) technologies would be preferred but is not required. Do you thrive working in a fast-paced environment?
