Senior Infrastructure & Virtualisation Consultant

Senior Infrastructure and Virtualisation Engineer required to work with a large Government Department. This is a 9 -month contract, paying 750 per day, inside IR35. This is a remote contract until further notice (London based offices).

SC clearance is required for this role

You will:
*Work in close collaboration with the Programme Manager, Principal Architect, Principal Engineer and wider Programme team.
*Engage with administrators and engineers in the Data Centre and existing Live Services team and with the Programme Delivery Partners as necessary.
*Engage with vendors, suppliers and external stakeholders as necessary

You will work on:
*Ensuring the Programme Manager and Team are aware of and understand technical activities, risks, issues and dependencies involved in delivery of a highly complex programme spanning multiple technologies, teams and streams of work.
*Design, delivery and documentation of virtualised infrastructure and supporting services e.g. backup, DR. The platform already exists, although there is a requirement to ensure a) it is fit for purpose and good practice has been adhered to and b) key supporting services are delivered, integrated and available
*Working with Development and Test Teams to support and enable the migration of refactored applications off legacy infrastructure to the platform.
*Facilitating the Acceptance into Service of migrated applications from a technical viewpoint e.g. ensuring documentation is updated, IT Health Checks are completed etc.
*This will include:
oElicitation and development of high-level business requirements into a viable solution, progressing options through to approval at the relevant Technical Design Authority.
oCoordinating and facilitating discovery and technical discussions, communicating and translating technical requirements and dependencies in order to help Delivery Managers coordinate, plan and deliver technical solutions.
oProducing technical documentation up-front or retrospectively to ensure a good standard of documentation is achieved for deployed infrastructure, configurations and applications.
oVerification of deployed infrastructure and application set-up and configuration against existing documentation and good practice. Subsequent updating of that documentation, ensuring there are no deltas.
*Provide consultancy on upgrades and patches for Cisco UCS, VMware, Microsoft and other products
*Work with Principal Architect and Principal Engineer to develop best practices with respect to process and documentation/templates
*Engage with Quality Assurance colleagues and feed into test script development and test documentation for on-premises, to virtualised environment, to private cloud migration paths
*Transfer knowledge to other team members and share new ideas to improve products or processes
*Help maintain valid licensing/certification levels with vendors

Essential Skills and Experience
*Must have experience working closely with Delivery Managers to help identify sequencing of technical activities, key risks and dependencies and support the production of detailed delivery plans.
*Ability and willingness to explain highly technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, particularly in terms of key dependencies and deployment sequence, helping coordination and planning of activities.
*Experience producing a high standard of documentation, including HLDs, LLDs, Knowledge Articles and Technical Work Instructions.
*Industry based certifications: Cisco UCS, VMware, or MCP Designations.
*Experience in a Virtualization role either at the 2nd or at the 3rd level
*A strong hands-on work history with the following technologies: VMware vSphere, Cisco UCS, Cisco Nexus Switches, MS Windows Linux Redhat
*Proven experience troubleshooting virtualized computing environments as well as those servers running a Windows or Linux operating system
*Experience with storage technologies (SAN and NAS) and solutions at an enterprise level for IT solutions. HPE 3PAR would be preferable.
*Disaster Recovery strategies and solution development - experience of Zerto as a DR capability would be desirable.
*Backup strategies and data retention including backup to disk and backup to tape technology - experience of Zerto as a backup capability would be desirable.
*Knowledge of networking and security technologies and products (i.e. Antivirus, Data Protection Advisor)
*Infrastructure-as-a-Service expertise
*Experience on projects that have spanned multiple systems and integration points
*Exceptional communication, interpersonal and verbal skills

Desirable Skills and Experience
*Knowledge of Police Networks
*Previous use of ITIL methodology for BAU activity
