Role purpose
Reporting into the Head of Infrastructure, the Infrastructure Design Engineer role will work as part of a team who manage and maintain the Company's current on premise Infrastructure and contribute to an aggressive change program to move us to a consolidated hybrid cloud infrastructure.
Role responsibilities & accountabilities:
IT Infrastructure support for the business
Deliver the implementation of new solutions in line with the Systems and Infrastructure Strategy and Business objectives
Server & network infrastructure design and support through use of VMware, Linux & Microsoft technologies
Incident, Problem & Change management of technical issues
Detailed understanding of Microsoft Azure. Linux and/or Windows System administration and filesystem concepts, including datacentre designs to best practice
Provide advanced systems and Infrastructure support as requested as part of troubleshooting analysis
Provide technical expertise with infrastructure migration methodologies (including Datacentre migrations)
Mentor existing staff on infrastructure design including best practices and technology
Support on-premises hosted infrastructure with activities related to capacity planning, maintaining, and sustainment
Work with the application team, infrastructure project managers, etc. to produce solution designs for new implementations
Timely communication with users, colleagues and partners to inform, log and escalate
Identifying, recommending and testing emerging technologies, products, methods and techniques
Document as required (e.g. specification, design, map, runbook or change).
Experience:
* You will be a self-starter, who enjoys their profession, and who will bring energy and enthusiasm to the role
* You will be a team player with design experience across the whole Infrastructure space and who can get stuck in
* You will be able to adapt and understand the business requirements to ensure solution designs are fit for this business, not just off the shelf or best practice in theory
* You are likely to have extensive experience in a Senior Infrastructure Design role
* Working within an ITIL support environment
* Able to work in a setting where planning, self-starting, organisation and communication are key
* Will have demonstrated experience of designing and contributing to major project streams within IT and the wider business, either by recommending improvement, assessing capability or advising with regard to technology or process
* Inspires confidence with an ability to work dynamically, collaboratively & effectively
* Excellent analytical and conceptual thinking skills with a keen attention to detail
* Confident in taking on challenges and enjoys learning new concepts, methodologies and technologies
* Demonstrates personal commitment
* Solid communication, both written and oral
* Presentation techniques confident in front of Experts & Leaders alike
* Training & Mentoring with an innate willingness to share knowledge
* Able to evidence establishing documented workflows and procedure.
Key Technical skills of role:
* Ability to document in depth information regarding system security baselines, configurations, deviations, and justifications for security recommendations
* Qualifications in the following desirable, but not essential; MCSE or MCITP, Cisco CCNA, ITIL Foundation
* Strong background in various technologies including Linux and Microsoft
* Applied systems engineering experience working with design principles and Windows server applications
* Familiarity with Virtualization (Hyper-V and VMware) technologies and methodologies
* Strong knowledge of VMware 6.5 Enterprise Plus including vSphere
* Design and configuration of Backup/Business Continuity strategies and technology (Veeam)
* Competent with network management (LAN, Firewalls, Load balancers, monitoring)
* Clear understanding and exposure to storage management (Pure Storage)
* Experience in one or more scripting languages (e.g. PowerShell)
* Installing, configuring, and hardening systems (Windows 2012, 2016, 2019, OEL 7.4)
* Some practical experience with Azure beneficial
* Experience with network devices and boundary protections (Ex: Cisco Switching, Firewalls)
* Networking experience and an understanding of network protocols, DNS, VPN, and load balancing
